If you are like the majority of us that own a business, at some point your businesses seems to run us instead of the other way around. It is easy to get caught in this trap, and unless you realize it on your own or someone points it out to you, the cycle can be endless.

What we recommend to our clients is that they structure their day so that they arrive before any of the staff. We recommend arriving at least one hour before anyone else does and begin each day planning what you need to accomplish that day.

This is a good time to take care of any paperwork, reading or emails that you keep pushing off for another day.

When you are able to take care of small tasks that you have been avoiding, you begin each day with a sense of accomplishment regardless of how small it may be. You begin each day refreshed and ready to take on the day.

Create a list of things that you need to take care that day and work to accomplish completing as many as you can during the day.

Structure your day as much as you can, for example, return phone calls during a certain period of time each day. Read and respond to emails at a certain time of the day. Create as much routine as you can manage. This structure will begin to give you control of your day and not the other way around.

By adding structure to your day, you will become a more effective business executive.

Time management is the enemy of most executives, and it takes some discipline to make it work in your favor. Teach your staff to use this same method, and you will have a more efficient team. This will lessen their personal stress levels, which will enable them to become more efficient employees.

Efficiency, whether process improvement or time improvement, will help increase your bottom line.

Once you have accomplished time management, you will have created time in which you can focus on expanding your business and meeting customer expectations.

Remember, everything starts at the top, you set the example and tone for your business. You will be surprised how at how quickly your staff will pick up on your new habit and follow your example.
